Friday’s contest against Del City was a big game for the Guthrie High School boy’s soccer team in their search for a playoff spot.

The Bluejays came into this game with a district record of 2-3, the Jays knew the importance of this game, came out strong and found the back of the net within the first minutes of the match with a penalty kick scored by Senior Erick Wiin.

However, Del City responded with a very physical game and managed to tie the game minutes later.

The game turned into an intense battle in midfield which led to constant fouls.

Jay LeGrande gave Guthrie a 2-1 lead before halftime.

The game ended with a 4-1 victory for the Bluejays with Kevin Ayala adding two goals on the scoreboard in the second half.

But not everything went in favor of the Jays. Despite the victory and moving to a four-game winning streak, Guthrie will be without one of their players next week.

Toward the end of the game, a red card was handed down to Legrande, who will now not be able to play in the regular season finale.

Head coach Ted Lausen regretted what happened and said, “it’s going to be a tough hole to fill, one of our younger kids is going to have to pick up the slack.”

Guthrie is now 3-3 in district and will fight for a playoff spot when they visit the district’s first place team in Northwest Classen on Tuesday.

Senior captain David Vargas knows it won’t be easy but has faith on his team.

“We have to come out and play hard until the final whistle.”
