As high school and college football teams go through their fall camps, so does the little league football teams in Guthrie. Their season opener is Aug. 23.
Guthrie will begin season number four with the Deep Fork Valley football league, but this year will be the first time the younger Jays will field a first grade team. They will be joined with the second through sixth grade teams.
All six teams got their practices started on Aug. 4.
The nine-game schedule is tilted just a bit for the royal blue and white. The Jays will host four regular season games and on the road for five, including the first two games to start the season. Once again, home games will be played at the high school practice field.
The first grade team will kick things off at 9:30 a.m. each week and eventually leading up to the sixth grader’s kick off time of approximately 4 p.m. each week.
Coaching the first grade team is Michael Gatson, Dennis Ochs is in charge of the second grader’s, Daniel Calvert with the third grader’s, Shawn Ingle leading the fourth grade team, Jason Hirzel takes over the fifth grade team and Justin Stevenson will lead the sixth grade team.
The coaching staffs visited with high school head football coach Kelly Beeby and offensive coordinator Scott Mick prior to the start of their practices to learn techniques and drills that have been installed in the program.
