Guthrie Sports Page All Decade Team

Members of the 2008 state championship team won the first state title since 1969.

The decade that saw Guthrie BlueJay basketball program back on top. Two years in a row with back-to-back state championships in boys basketball.

That perhaps is what people will remember about the decade, but it may have taken the Jays to a different level as one of the top program's in the state.

The boys 2008 state championship was the first title since 1969 and then the 2009 state championship was the school's sixth basketball title. Guthrie is currently tied for 10th overall in the entire state with six state championships.

The Jays landed in the tournament five of the 10 years including the last four years straight. Overall the program has made 24 state appearances and are 28-18 when playing in the biggest tournament.

Head coach Pete Papahronis put his stamp on the program by winning two state championships in the decade and became the third Guthrie coach to achieve the honor. During those two title campaign's the Jays were 49-6.

The Lady Jays did not make any state tournaments in the decade, but the 2007-2008 season was oh so close. A regional championship stunner and were three seconds away from playing in the big dance.

Guthrie made national news when then senior Donte' Foster made a two-handed three point shot with his back to the basket as time expired in the first quarter. The shot was made national shows including Good Morning America and was voted as a Top Play by ESPN's Sportscenter on January 27th, 2009. You can view the shot by clicking here.
