The 2009-2010 Guthrie Lady Jays basketball season has not quite gone as many
Guthrian's were hoping for. However, it's not time to write off these Lady Jays
quite yet.
A 4-11 record and a 1-6 conference record is nothing anyone was hoping for or
expecting, but when you play in the north in the Suburban Conference that record
can happen.
Deer Creek and El Reno are a guarantee to be locks to host regionals from the
north.
Western Heights with a solid week this week will be another team to host.
Obviously, Carl Albert is going to host and Harrah is going to host a 4A
regional.
Piedmont is a top 20 team in 4A, Shawnee is a solid team, but will have to play
the playoffs in 6A. The Suburban Conference is tough. With that being said, it
will give the Lady Jays a chance in a regional, and perhaps in the area
tournament.
This is the last week where team records and play is considered for the playoffs
and regional seeding's. Guthrie will have a chance to win a
regional game and maybe a shot at winning the regional. As long as the Jays stay
away from the Carl Albert regional.
If the Lady Jays land in either the Deer Creek, El Reno, or as I am predicting
the Western Heights regional then game on for the Lady Jays. Guthrie may play in
a do-or-die game against someone like an Ada (7-6), Northwest Classen (8-9), or
Altus (5-9) on the first day of regionals. All three of those games are
achievable.
Western Heights has games with Deer Creek and El Reno this week. If the Lady
Jets split then they have a strong case to be the fourth team from the west to
host. Two losses and I still think they have a better resume then an Ada, Altus,
or NW Classen.
We will have a more clearer picture next Tuesday (February 9th).
Yes, between Deer Creek, El Reno, and Western Heights the Lady Jays are a
combine 0-4, but except for one of those games they had a chance to win, and in
three of those were losses by 9 or less.
Am I predicting a regional championship, or a state tournament trip? No, but I
am saying it is possible regardless what the present record indicates that the
Lady Jays can make an area tournament.
Much like the boys in 5A this season the East side has more of the larger ranked
teams. In fact, seven of the top 10 teams in the girls rankings come from the
east side with Carl Albert, Deer Creek, and El Reno representing the west.
The 2007-2008 Lady Jays were 11-10 entering regionals and surprised El Reno by
winning the regional after the Lady Indians had beaten Guthrie twice that season.
Playoff basketball can be a funny thing, and the Lady Jays have done funny
things before.
