Lady Jays win season opener in Duncan Tourney

By: Chris Evans

The Guthrie Lady Jays basketball season got underway on the correct path with a win over Skiatook, 55-46, to open the Duncan Tournament and did it in comeback fashion.

Guthrie ended the first quarter trailing 15-4 and that was not surprising to Guthrie assistant coach James Gilbertson.

"It was our first game out and you can tell the younger girls were nervous. Their shots were short and that is going to happen with the high expectations that we have with our new coaching staff," Gilbertson said about the sluggish start of the game.

The Lady Jays started their comeback by outscoring Skiatook 16-10 in the second quarter and then in the second half the Guthrie defense would proved to be the difference.

Guthrie held Skiatook to just eight third quarter points while adding 19 themselves. Senior guard Emily Davis led the way with a game high 27 points while fellow seniors Bianca Smith and Jessica Dwyer added nine and seven points, respectively.

"Our defense picked up in the second half," Gilbertson said. Skiatook finished the game with 20 plus turnovers.

With a 39-33 advantage heading into the final quarter, the Lady Jays would not allow Skiatook any closer then the six points.

Guthrie will now play host Duncan tonight at 7:00 p.m. The Lady Demons defeated US Grant and tonight's winner will play for the championship against either Lawton Mac or El Reno.
