Lady Jays unlucky in Reno with loss

By: Chris Evans

Unfortunately for the Guthrie Lady Jays they had to play after half time in El Reno and that proved to be the difference as Guthrie scored just 18 second half points in a 53-45 loss to sixth ranked El Reno Tuesday night.

No. 13th ranked Guthrie drops their record to 5-3 while El Reno improves to 11-3. The Lady Jays also drop their first conference game of the season and stand at 2-1 and El Reno increases their advantage with a 6-1 conference record including 4-0 in the North division.

The Lady Jays went into the half leading 20-15 on 8 of 20 shooting and maybe more impressive holding the Lady Indians to just 15 first half points including holding down Britney Nuzum to just two points in the half.

Nuzum had 24 points in the first meeting of the season between the two teams when El Reno defeated Guthrie in the Duncan Tournament championship game.

However, the game would start to spin out of control for Guthrie in the third quarter when El Reno open up a full court press resulting in eight Lady Jays turnovers in the quarter and five give away's in the first 4:00 of the quarter.

Senior Jessica Dwyer hit a bucket :25 seconds into the quarter to make it 22-15, but El Reno would then go on a 9-0 run in the next 1:13 to take the lead for good from Guthrie, 24-22 with 5:07 to play in the third.

In the same third quarter, Nuzum would come alive with 13 points and would finish with 20 second half points to finish with a game high 22 points. By the end of the nightmarish third quarter, El Reno had outscored the Lady Jays 21-10. However, despite the turnovers and the El Reno run, Guthrie only trailed by 36-30 going into the final quarter.

In that quarter both teams would trade baskets. Guthrie was able to pull within five points, 38-33, but that would be the closest they would be able to get. El Reno's biggest lead of the night was 10 points midway through the fourth quarter.

Emily Davis finished with 19 points for a team high and three above her season average. Dwyer finished with 14 points on a great shooting night for the senior.

Dwyer was 5-6 from the field, including 2-2 from beyond the arch and was perfect from the free throw line.

Things do not get any easier for the Lady Jays as they travel to Harrah Friday night. The Lady Panthers are 8-3 after beating Noble 79-42 Tuesday night. Harrah will enter the game ranked No.5 in Class 5A.
