Things have changed for the Guthrie Lady Jays softball team. Well, sort of.
The Guthrie Lady Jays softball program will be guided by a new head coach this
fall, but it will be a familiar face and name to the players and to the program.
Brian Jackson is set to begin his first season as the head coach of the Lady
Jays, but will be in his seventh year at Guthrie, serving as the coach of the
junior high softball team.
"I'm looking forward to it. We have a fairly talented group of freshmen coming
in so the next few years should be fun," the skipper said of his new position as
varsity coach.
Jackson will be the seventh coach in the last 14-years for the program, but
according one source outside the program feels, "they absolutely have hit a
homerun with the hiring of Brian Jackson."
Jackson, who serves as a geometry and finance teacher at the high school, is
familiar with the Guthrie program and more importantly the players are familiar
with him.
"It's a good situation both ways," the Oklahoma State Cowboy alum said.
Guthrie has had a bumpy road competing in 5A and in conference play over the
last few years when it comes to wins and losses, but Jackson understands the
situation that his team is currently in.
"I've been realistic with the girls," Jackson said. "They understand the
struggles more so than me, so that hasn't been much of an issue."
Jackson believes to improve as a team and to gain confidence back the girls are
going have to start from the beginning with the basics.
"I've stressed that for us to be a competitive team, we're going to need to do
little things well and become scrappers," Jackson said.
In softball, it all starts in the pitching circle and leading the way this year
will be senior Kacey Acker, who will finish a 4-year letterman. Her battery mate
will be Amber Coffman.
Jackson will look for more experience from infielder Macy Sneeberger and
outfielder Charle King.
