The Guthrie Lady Jay softball team opened up the 2009 season, on the road, in
Harrah to begin the Brian Jackson era. The Panthers took advantage of some
Guthrie miscues in the fourth inning and took the win, 7-1.
"The game was not as bad as it sounds," first year head coach Jackson
said on his trip back to
Guthrie.
In fact, the Jays gave the traditionally strong Harrah team a run for their money in
the first four innings.
Guthrie took a 1-0 lead , in the 4th inning, when senior Kacey Acker blasted a
triple and scored on a Charla King RBI single up the middle, but the lead would
not last long.
The Lady Panthers took advantage of a hit-by-pitch, walk, and an error to the
first 3-batters of the inning and all three Panthers eventually scored.
"We got out of some jams and I was pleased on how things went, especially
early," Jackson said.
Acker took the lost despite pitching 5 and two-thirds innings by allowing six
runs with four of those being earned.
Freshmen McHale Hopfer came in relief and performed well in her varsity debut.
"If she can learn to throw her change-up for a strike she will be tough,"
Jackson said of his young hurler.
For the coach, in his first varsity game how did it go?
"It was a lot of fun. No nerves. Being around the program helps with that,"
Jackson explained as being in the program now for seven years.
Jackson and the Lady Jays return back to the field on Thursday, Friday, and
Saturday when they participate in the Cushing Tournament. The schedule is set
for Guthrie to play two games on both Thursday and Friday and finish with 1-game
on Saturday.
