The Guthrie Lady Jay softball team came away with two victories in their three games Monday night and played in honor of their fallen classmate Ty Nichols. Guthrie improved to 4-3 after the three games in the Perry Summer League.
The Lady Jays wore black ribbons as well as a #72 on their shoulders as they remembered Nichols, who passed away Saturday night due to an enlarged heart.
Head coach Shelley Berryman's team picked up a 4-3 win in their first game over Blackwell. Guthrie scratched across three runs in the bottom of the first and would then hold off the Lady Maroons in the last inning with three runs. Guthrie got the win despite not picking up a hit.
In the second game, Guthrie picked up the bats with five hits against Tonkawa, but could only manage two runs in a 6-2 loss. Tonkawa scored all six runs in the third inning when at the time Guthrie had a 1-0 lead. Trailing 6-1, Guthrie would get one more run on the board in the fourth and final inning.
Kacie Acker led the Lady Jays with a double and would double, again, in the third and final game of the day.
Acker not only picked up her third double of the summer, but got her second win pitching to improve to 2-0 for the summer. Guthrie picked up their fourth win in seven games this summer with a 9-7 decision over Morrison.
Guthrie trailing 2-0 when they came to bat for the first time, but would respond with five runs of their own. However, Morrison would put together five runs of their own to go up 7-5, but Guthrie scored four runs in their last at bat to come away with the win.
In the win, Guthrie allowed just one Morrison hit while putting five hits together, but committed three errors and in the three games combined had a total of 9 errors.
Berryman's Lady Jays will participate in a round robin this Saturday in Perry.
