BlueJays hit gridiron for camp
This week the Jays are "learning" as they participate in the 2009 Guthrie BlueJay Football Camp.

Craig FleckBlueJay fans entered the Ponca City scrimmage with the Wildcats and Enid Plainsmen, Friday night, full of anticipation and questions. Fortunately, for us, in the media, the answer to the one question on everyone’s mind was not apparent.

That’s right folks. We are no closer to figuring out who the starting quarterback will be then we were Thursday.

We did find out some stuff that was still up in the air though. Here’s a quick breakdown.

The Bluejays can’t really go wrong at quarterback. All three candidates (Christina Lamb, Hayden Seifert, and Bryan Dutton) looked good Friday night, making some very good throws throughout the evening. Sure, they made mistakes, but that’s what happens in scrimmages. These young men will get better, and have a pretty good jumping off point already.

Senior Dustin Bowman (above) and Sophomore Blake Belcher look to help anchor the offensive line.

So everybody should just take a deep breath and wait for the coaches to figure this thing out. It may come down to the wire, but they’ll be okay any which way they turn.

Kentrell Brothers is going to have a very special season. When he wasn’t jumping over defensive backs to go get a pass as a wide-out, he was blowing by offensive linemen on his way to the quarterback from his defensive end spot. four catches, three sacks…good luck 5A.

This offensive line unit is the best I’ve seen at Guthrie in a while. We’ve seen some good linemen come through these parts, but I can’t remember a unit that was this far at this point since…well, I won’t start those comparisons.

The word of the year for Bluejay football will be "platoon". At both running back and defensive back, there are several very talented players who bring unique skill sets. Look for the coaching staff to be running people on and off the field constantly at those positions.

But if there’s one thing that we learned Friday evening, it was that the Jays are well ahead of where we thought they were. Buckle your seat belts fans. This is going to be a fun ride.

You can listen to the radio play back call of the scrimmage beginning Sunday night at 7:00 on Guthrie Sports Page Radio.
