Anything you can do, I can do....the same.
Landry Chappell and Bryan Dutton capped of a state tournament they will remember
for quite some time. Although, a state championship did not come the way for the
Guthrie BlueJay duo, both finished with a third place showing in their weight
class in the 89th annual state wrestling tournament inside the State Fair Arena,
in Oklahoma City.
Not only did both win their last two matches, on Saturday, but they also got
revenge in their final match with wins over opponents who defeated them in
regionals just last week.
Chappell was tied with the East's top seeded wrestler, Wes Atkins, at 3-all
before Chappell got a take down with just 15 seconds left to get the 4-3 win.
Chappell got a 1-0 decision over Altus's Ryan Feller to set up his battle with
Atkins.
Meanwhile, Dutton got his revenge on Grove's Bryce Armstrong with a narrow 1-0
win and to set all that up, Dutton got a convincing 6-2 win. Perhaps, not as
convincing? He got the win in overtime.
Dutton finishes his freshmen campaign with a 33-5 overall record and Chappell
finished with a 28-10 season. Both were major contributors to the Jays football
team and both are expected to do the same on the baseball diamond this spring.
More coverage coming soon to GSP.
Day One
Making their first trip to the state wrestling tournament in their young varsity
career's, sophomore Landry Chappell and freshmen Bryan Dutton had mixed emotions
on day one.
Each advance to Saturday's final day, but neither one will have a chance to win
the state title in their weight class.
Dutton hit the mat first and faced
a fellow freshmen in
Kellan Torres, of Altus.
Torres is the number one seeded wrestler from the West
as Dutton drew the number four seed from the East.
Torres, who entered the match a perfect 39-0, got the win over Dutton, 3-1.
Torres then defeated Kyle Buff, of Pryor, 7-4 to advance to the 140 pound
championship match.
Dutton regrouped, however, in his next match to get a 5-1 decision over Bishop
McGuinness's Ryan Bass to improve his season record to 31-5.
Chappell took the opposite approach by getting a win in his first match before
dropping his second match.
Chappell took 5:34 to get the win with a pin on freshmen Jacoby Brown, of
Chickasha. Chappell, the number two seed from the East, then drew No. 1 seeded
senior Mike Anderson from the West and perhaps one of the top wrestlers in the
entire state in the second round.
Anderson (32-3), who won 30 matches a season ago with a torn ACL pinned his
first round opponent in Grove's Weston Culvey to set up his showdown with
Chappell.
Anderson who got a victory earlier in the season over Chappell (26-10) picked up
his second pin of state in 2:23 to send Chappell to the wrong side of the
bracket.
