Durant -- The Guthrie BlueJay's traveled to Durant in search of a very important first district win Friday night and returned back to BlueJayville early Saturday morning with it.
Guthrie defeated Durant 28-14 to improve their record to 2-2 on the season, but more importantly are 1-0 in district 5A-2 along with Carl Albert, Shawnee, and Ardmore, who all got wins in Week 4.
Durant falls to 1-3 and 0-1 in district play. Capitol Hill, Harrah, and Noble also fall to 0-1 in district play.
Guthrie head coach Rafe Watkins coached his 101st game as the Jays head man and broke the record that was previously set by Robin Roof, who coached 9 full seasons (1988-1996). Warkins is now 78-23 while coaching on the Jays sideline.
The Jays are also 28-9 in the month of September since 2001.
For the second consecutive week, the Jays offense was driven by freshmen quarterback Bryan Dutton, who finished with 259 all purpose yards and was in on each of the four touchdowns. Dutton was named as the Farmers and Merchants Player of the Game for the second straight week.
Neither team was able to find the end zone in the first quarter. However, the Jays were able to move the ball down the field in the opening quarter, but an interception and fumble stalled the Jays each drive inside the Durant 20-yard line.
Guthrie hit pay dirt first when Dutton hit junior wide receiver Devonte' McCully on an 11-yard touchdown pass. McCully made a nice move back toward the ball to give the Jays a 7-0 lead after Hank Hudson's PAT with 8:04 left to play in the first half.
Dutton found the end zone just 1:02 later on a 15-yard touchdown run to cap off a 2-play drive. Dutton made a nice move by stretching the ball across the plain for the score and to increase the Jays lead, 14-0.
Durant and star senior quarterback took the ensuing kick off and marched 65-yards on 9 plays to bring the Lions back within a touchdown 14-7. Alves scored from 4-yards out.
Alves has now rushed for over 100-yards in all four games for the Lions, but was forced to the sideline with an apparent ankle injury late in the game.
The Lions scored too quickly and gave the Jays enough time to go down the field and score just 2:28 later. The drive was set up nicely by senior Dustin Bohanan, who returned the kick off from the five to the 46-yard line.
From there, Guthrie used 2:00 off the clock to go an impressive 11 play drive that was finished off by Dutton's second passing score. This time finding sophomore John Clark for a 6-yard reception with just eight seconds to play in the half and go into the locker leading 21-7 after Hudson's third PAT.
Both teams failed to score in the third quarter, but both settled for one touchdown each in the fourth quarter.
Alves, who finished with 268 yards of total offense that matched the same amount of yards as the entire Lions team accumulated, scored from 3-yards out on a fourth down play. Durant had first and goal inside the 1-yard line and failed to get in on the first three plays before scoring on fourth down.
The Lions score took 15 plays and nearly 6:00, but that would the last for Durant as they pulled within 21-14 with 11:13 remaining in the game.
As the Jays did earlier in the game, they responded to the Durant touchdown with a touchdown of their own and in the process ate up 4:21 of game time on a 14 play drive.
On the 14th play, Dutton and McCully hooked up again. This time on a 9-yard pass to conclude the scoring at 28-14.
The BlueJays will return back to the Rock this coming Friday as they host the Ardmore Tigers. Ardmore shut out Noble 28-0 to get their first win of the season. The game will be broadcasted by both Guthrie and Ardmore radio teams along with KSBI-TV.
