Both the Guthrie BlueJays and Bixby Spartans did something last week that many did not see coming and many more will be surprised when one of these teams are playing for the 5A State Championship next week.

The Jays and Spartans meet up for the fourth time in the past five years, at Pioneer Stadium in Stillwatrer, Friday night with a 7:30 kickoff. It's a rematch of the 2007 State Championship game as the Jays won 16-3 to earn their school's second state title.

The Spartans won 28-14, in 2005, and Guthrie won in 2006 with a 31-15 win. Both games were second round match-ups, in Bixby.

Carl Albert and El Reno will play in the other 5A semi final game Friday at Putnam City High School. The two winners will meet and play for the gold ball next week at Boone Pickens Stadium.

Bixby enters the game with playoff wins over Tulsa Central (17-13) and Shawnee (28-21) while Guthrie has road wins at Duncan (20-12) and Tulsa East Central (25-24).

Bixby trailed 21-7 at halftime, in Shawnee, before scoring 21 unanswered points and stopping the Wolves with a goal line stand with a second left to play in the game.

Guthrie and Bixby started the season with 0-2 records and share current 8-4 records. When you combine the eight losses between the two schools they have all come from top ranked teams. In fact, Bixby has lost to the No. 1 team in 6A (Jenks), 5A (Bishop Kelley), and 4A (Glenpool). The other lost came in Week 9 to Booker T. Washington, 10-2, who many thought were the favorites of 5A until handed down penalties from the OSSAA.

Bixby's Dewitt Jennings III (6'0, 220 lbs), who played in the '07 state title game against Guthrie as a sophomore, has rushed for 239-yards, scored three times, has thrown for a touchdown on a half back pass, and has piled up 20 tackles to go along with two interceptions in the last two weeks alone.

The University of Tulsa commitment, Jennings, has rushed for 1,197 yards and has 15 scores from his running back position. Jennings, who will also run some wildcat, rushed for 119-yards last week against Shawnee and is hard to bring down with arm tackles. Jennings has two brothers that currently play for the Spartans.

Another senior who played in the title game is quarterback Kevin Lamb (6'1. 190 lbs). Lamb, who's brother and dad played baseball at Oral Roberts University and is a Division I baseball prospect himself, broke his hand earlier this season and just had his cast cut off two weeks ago, but has found his groove in the last two weeks.

Lamb has thrown for over 1,200 yards while completing almost 62% of his passes and with his baseball background can throw the ball with some zip, but is able to move around the pocket and throw on the run when needed.

"Its almost like a revenge match," Lamb said on the Bixby's weekly coaches show. "Get them (Guthrie) back from my sophomore year."

Lamb's top receiver Austin White has accumulated 715-yards in the air and of his 43-catches, eight have been for scores. The Spartans receivers as a group run very precise routes and are great blockers down field for Jennings and the running game.

Spartans head coach Pat McGrew, now in his 11th season, is a defensive minded coach and that is what most people think first when they talk about Bixby football. The defense is allowing the same amount of points as the Jays are at 14 a game and both like to come strong after the quarterback and running backs.

McGrew's top tackler is senior Taylor Schuyler (6'4, 240 lbs) from his defensive end spot, who sports jersey No. 83. Linebackers Reed Timms (6'2, 220) and Garrett McKenzie (6'3, 220) provide toughness to the middle of the defense. Along with Jennings in the secondary, Kameron Kopczynski (6'2, 185) has been making plays all season, but more here recently in the playoffs.

McGrew, who has coached in the '05 and '07 title games, said in his weekly coaches show that successful corners equal successful defense in his scheme, and that is what he has gotten from junior corner backs Deangelo Jennings (6'0, 185) and Michael Nelson (5'8, 160). The Spartans have the most interceptions in one season with McGrew has the head coach at Bixby. Kopczynski leads that category with six and ranks second in 5A in picks.

"We have as a good of a chance as anyone. This is probably one of the best teams I have ever had as far as mental state of this team," McGrew said prior to the start of the playoffs.

The game can be heard on Triple Play Sports Radio 105.1 FM as well as on Guthrie Sports Page Radio. Chris Evans, Casey Porter, Craig Fleck, and Shawn Ingle will bring you the exciting action.
