The BlueJays come back to Jelsma Stadium after spending the last
two weeks on the road and will entertain the Ardmore Tigers in
another key 5A-2 match-up with the Ardmore Tigers.
Both teams picked up district wins last week. Guthrie went on
the road, to Durant, to get a 28-14 win and Ardmore blitzed the
Noble Bears 28-0. A win for Guthrie or Ardmore will go a long
ways in making the play-offs and play-off positioning, but a
loss does not knock either team out of the picture, but will
have a more uphill battle.
The game will have plenty of media coverage with both Guthrie
and Ardmore radio calls and a state wide television audience on
KSBI-TV (Channel 15 and 715 locally).
Ardmore (1-3) hit the winning path after starting the season 0-3
against opponents, who currently are a combine 11-1. The Tigers
have dropped losses to Ada (4-0), Duncan (3-1, and McAlester
(4-0).
A season ago Ardmore dropped their Week 10 game with Durant to
end their season out of the play-offs. Something Ardmore is not
used too. The Tigers have a rich tradition with having won four
state tittles (1953, 1982, 1990, and 1992).
The Tigers are looking to improve offensively after averaging
22-points a game a season ago and losing six starters, but so
far are behind the mark with an average of just under 18.
However, the skill positions will give the Tigers a chance to
put some points on the board.
In the 28-0 win over Noble, the Tigers gained 150-yards rushing
with running back Andra Brown (5'7, 170) getting the bulk of
those yards with 125 on 18 rushes. Brown, a junior, is a
physical back that possess good speed.
Handing
the ball of to Brown will be 3-year starting quarterback Reed
Downing (5'11, 190). The senior was six of 11 passing for nearly
200-yards last week over Noble. Downing is also the middle
linebacker and lead the team in tackles last week with six.
Top receivers for the Tigers will be Reuben Tiller, Rico Murphy,
and Zachgery Scurry. All three are dangerous once they get open
and set their feet.
Larry McBroom returns for his second year as the Tigers head
coach. The legendary coach has over 200 wins in Oklahoma with
199 of those coming in Ada. Ironicly, McBroom got career win 200
over Ada as the Tigers coach.
This will be the fifth meeting between these two schools dating
back to 2002 with the Jays having a 3-1 advantage and 2-0 at
Jelsma. In last year's meeting, Guthrie picked up a 34-0 win
after jumping out to a 21-0 halftime lead.
Ardmore's 20-0 play-off win, in 2003, featured Ardmore and
current Oklahoma University stand out tight end Jermaine
Gresham, who announced Tuesday he will enter the 2010 NFL Draft.
