Guthrie, Okla. -- In a
battle of top ten teams, No. 8 Western Heights was able to
escape the Guthrie gymnasium with a 57-49 victory over the 5th
ranked Blue Jays.
The opening quarter was a fast pace up and
down game, that was started off with a Kenneth Mayfield basket
just 13 seconds into the contest. Chaunsey Dumas and Kentrell
Brothers combined to give Guthrie a 3-2 lead with 6:49 lead in
the first. The slim margin would be the only lead of the game
for the Jays.
Western Heights battled back. Scoring the
next six points before Brothers was able to nail a three point
shot from top of the key. Devon Hall was able to put a basket
back in and tying the ball game at eight a piece with 3:40 left
in the opening quarter.
Western Heights again was able to go on
another mini six point run, giving them the 14-8 advantage.
Codee Gross and B.J. McDonald pushed the Blue Jays back into the
ball game as the quarter ended. Tim Zupo hit a free throw with
17 seconds left to end the quarter at 18-13 in favor of the
Jets.
Second quarter stayed with the frantic up and
down pace of the first quarter. However, there wasn’t as much
scoring. Guthrie made just two baskets in the early in the
quarter by Hall and Gross. However, the Achilles' heel of the
game was also for the half. Guthrie was 5-12 in the quarter from
the line. Halftime, Western Heights had a 26-20 lead.
Gross scored the first three points of the
third quarter for Guthrie, as they inched back into the game.
After a couple of Jet’s baskets, Hall scored, cutting the
deficit to 30-25 with 3:58 to play in the quarter. Hall scored
the final three points of the quarter, as Guthrie wasn’t able to
put a basket in from the field, but tried to capitalize from the
line. At the end of the third quarter, the Jets clung to a 37-28
lead.
Western Heights was able to expose pressure
defense, hitting a man underneath the basket on multiple plays
from across the court. Gross, back at the line again, was able
to score three straight points again. Back in the game, Guthrie
trailed just 37-31 with 6:20 to play.
After Brothers hit a shot with 5:36
remaining, it cut the Western Heights lead to 39-33, he wasn’t
able to connect on the ensuing free throw. Western Heights would
then go on a 10-2 run in the next 2:31. Western Heights pushed
the lead to 49-35 with 2:30 remaining.
The Jays finished the night just 12 of 28
from the free throw line for 43% and committed 16 turnovers. The
Jets outrebounded the Jays 47-38.
Pressure defense and some hard work cut the
lead down in the quarter. However it was not enough as Western
Heights handed them another loss from the Jets. Guthrie falls to
10-6 and have lost back-to-back games for the second time this
season.
The Jets improved to 8-0 in conference play
and extend their chances of playing in the Suburban Conference
championship game while improving their season record to 13-4.
