Piedmont, Okla. -- We have all heard it before. An ugly win is still a win and indeed that is the case for the two time defending 5A state champions as they held off the Piedmont Wildcats 40-35 inside the Colette Fieldhouse.

The first quarter score appeared to be a great game on the baseball diamond between the two schools, but not so much on the hardwood as the Jays managed just three points and trailed 6-3.

Guthrie was not a whole lot better in the second quarter and thank goodness for Caleb Murillo. Murillo scored all eight of the Jays points to give the Jays a slim 11-10 halftime lead.

Murillo was named as the Farmers and Merchants Bank Player of the Game as he finished with 9 points.

The first half saw the two teams combine for 23 turnovers and 21 points.

The Jays picked it up more so in the third quarter with 12 total points and started the quarter on a 5-0 run in the first 3:30.

Guthrie built up to a 10 point lead, 21-11, with 3:18 left in the third, but the Wildcats were sparked by a Guthrie technical foul and would go on a 9-2 run over the last 2:54 of the quarter to make it a 23-20 game after three quarters.

Junior guard Kentrell Brothers scored all 14 of his points in the second half after picking up two fouls in the first quarter and not having played in the second.

Piedmont hit one of two from the free throw line to pull with two, 23-21, to start the fourth quarter, but could get any closer as the Jays built a lead as much of 9 points.

Guthrie will be in action today as they travel to El Reno, who defeated the Jays on their home floor in January. Listen to the game on 105.1 FM, or Guthrie Sports Page Radio.
