Guthrie, Okla. --
The 8th ranked Guthrie boys basketball team collected their
second win of the season over the Deer Creek Antlers and
improved to an 11-6 record.
The 11 and 6 record will be determined as too where the Jays will be ranked in
playoff positioning. The Jays are suspected to finish as the second, third, or
fourth overall seed in the West. Regardless, the Jays will host a 5A regional.
Western Heights will be the highest seed representing the West. All records will
be considered as of February 6th.
Deer Creek jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but then the Jays went on a 7-0 run and an
11-4 run to close out the first quarter up 18-6.
Sophomore point guard Codee Gross led the charge by scoring 10 points in the
quarter.
The Jays built a lead as much as 18 points with 3:15 left in the second quarter
on a Gross free throw, but the Antlers finished the quarter with a 6-2 advantage
to pull within 14 at the break, 29-15.
After a lengthy homecoming halftime ceremony, the Jays jumped out to a 10-3 run
to increase their lead up 39-18 and went into the fourth quarter up 17 points,
46-29.
Deer Creek was able to pull within 12, but the Jays pulled away to get their
second win of 20 points over the Antlers.
Guthrie will be busy this week with games on Monday (at Piedmont), Tuesday (at
El Reno), Thursday (Carl Albert), and Saturday (Super Saturday in Guthrie).
