GHS vs Del City

The Guthrie Bluejay basketball earned their first trophy of the season by defeating the Del City Eagles Saturday night in the Ardmore Holiday Festival Tournament, 64-59.

Guthrie defeated Class 4A's fifth ranked Southeast Spartans in the first round, 5A's eighth ranked and host team Ardmore Tigers, and 6A's 12th ranked Del City for the championship.

"The tournament was a good start for the season against good quality opponents," head coach Pete Papahronis said.

Junior Donte' Foster was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and teammates junior Keaton Callins and senior Kent McDonald picked up first team all tournament.

"I'm proud of the guys. This is the first time in a long time that Guthrie has won a tournament. It was nice that our players
finally get recognized," Papahronis said.

The Bluejays jumped out to a 27-16 half time lead and would need the cushion as the Eagles outscored the Jays 43-37 in the second half. Del City has a continued history of playing aggressive man-to-man defense, but has some offensive threats, in which, Guthrie resorted to younger players to play key defensive minutes in Devon Hall and Kentrell Brothers.

"It was good for our younger players for them to get some experience," Papahronis added.

Guthrie will now focus their attention back to the regular season beginning with Piedmont on Friday before hitting the Suburban Conference portion of the schedule. Papahronis said that the tournament helped his team get in better shape that practice can not do. The B-ballers were put behind schedule with the success of the football team winning state.

"Its nice to enjoy a tournament championship. Now we have to put it behind us and not be content and know we have a lot of work ahead of us now to get to where we want to be at the end of the year," Papahronis concluded.
