Class 5A: some things you need to know

By: Chris Evans

The following letter was supplied to Guthrie Sports Page after the Guthrie Bluejays defeated Midwest City to win the Titan Classic. This letter is written by the Carl Albert game ball that was used throughout the tournament.

        Dear Class 5A,

Well, I am here to inform you that the Guthrie Bluejays can play a little basketball too. I hear congratulations are in order for the Bluejay football team. I apologize. I have not heard too much about football since my Titans loss in the semi-finals, but congratulations on your second gold ball.

Speaking of congratulations, I suppose now is a good time to say great job on winning the Titan Classic. Sorry I am a little late getting this letter out to you because Midwest City was suppose to win this tournament. After all, they are the defending Class 6A champions.

However, I just knew if the Bombers did not win that Tulsa Union was going to. They are the third best team in the state's largest class. If nothing else, my beloved Titans were in this elite field as well, and we all know they won state last year in basketball.

Before you get upset with me Bluejay fans, please don't think I was the only one thinking this. I had an entire state thinking the same thing this weekend. I suppose that Guthrie locker room was thinking different, but I know what the masses were thinking.

I first saw this Bluejay basketball team on Thursday when they used me to score 70 points to beat Ardmore. Although, the Bluejays were suppose to beat that ranked team, again, cause they beat Ardmore when they won the Ardmore Tournament in December.

Friday came and there I was thrown into the air with Union and Guthrie. Those Tulsa boys were big down low and I just knew I was going to get passed down into the paint all day and pushed against the back board, but the Guthrie big men Jon Washington, Kent McDonald, Devon Hall, and BJ McDonald played pretty good themselves.

Now let me say one thing, Union shot me several times at their hoop and I felt a lot of rim that day. In fact, the only time I touched the net was in the fourth quarter when Union went on their run, but those Jays found a way to win. I guess that is one of the signs of a good team.

I sat on the scorer's table waiting on the next game and no one really was talking about the Union loss. Why would they? I mean Carl Albert and Midwest City are about to play and that is the game of the day.

My Titans went down to our cross town rival MWC Friday, but so had many others. I sat on the rack all night thinking how the Bombers were going to come back and dominate that football team playing basketball in January.

Donte' Foster used me several times this weekend. Heck, I think we had 55 points together. Suppose he gets to take that MVP trophy home and I get to sit on a metal rack.

Keaton Callins sure did know when to put me in the hoop. Geez, how many floating shots did he put me through? How about me falling in the hoop from three point land when the Jays needed it the most. My buddy, football, tells me he is a junior and returns next season to the gridiron and hardwood.

Kent McDonald threw me down in the closing seconds with a slam dunk against Union. I don't care what people say, but us basketballs like it when the big men throw us in for a dunk.

I was a little sad when Kent got into foul trouble on Friday 'cause he had to leave the game. McDonald always seems to have a smile on his face, and us basketballs know he is good for our game with his fun loving personality.

Oh by the way, will someone please tell the public address announcer to turn his microphone off while I am being used to shoot free throws. I understand Donte' and Matt Hamilton had no issue with it, but my goodness people know if they won their candles or not.

I over heard the Midwest City players talking about this Jay team and particularly the way that #33 plays defense. I think they said his name was Kentrell Brothers. Anyways, I found out he is only a freshmen and is several months away from a drivers license.

Holy Cow! No one has ever grabbed me so hard as that Clayton Smith did. Football told me ahead of time that once his hands are on you that he doesn't let go. Well, I guess so.

Oh, I forgot about Matt Hamilton. From the sounds of things I am not the only one who seems to forget about #10. Why is that? All he does is play aggressive defense and gets the offense running. I'm sure everyone knew Matt had five of the teams 14 fourth quarter points in the championship game.

Okay, okay! Time for me to get ready for a Titan practice, but Class 5A let me warn you now that these Jays can play and they play as a team. Another good aspect in a winning program and if that does not grab your attention then maybe this weekend did.

Congratulations Jays,

Basketball
