JV Baseball claims Guthrie Invitational Tournament

It was not a perfect week for the Guthrie junior varsity baseball team, but it was just enough to claim their own Guthrie Invitational Tournament. The Jays finished with two on the all-tournament and the most valuable player.

Squires Field was on display for the three-day event as the Jays hosted Stillwater, Choctaw, Bishop McGuinness, Kingfisher and Ponca City.

The Jays started 3-0 with wins over Stillwater, McGuinness and Choctaw before a hiccup on Saturday morning with a loss to Class 6A’s Ponca City.

With a 3-1 record, Guthrie needed a win late Saturday night over Kingfisher to claim the top prize and that’s what the Jays did with an 11-9 win.

Guthrie’s Mitchell Taft and Jacob Friese were selected as All-Tournament selections and Austin Gellenbeck was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Guthrie is coached by Seth Morgan and Terry Bennett Jr.
